Hoops legend Wudel reflects on career
Hey, give him a break. He just started his second half-century.
The local basketball icon turned 50 last week. Not coincidentally, he also picked up his 350th coaching victory last month, and won his 50th game as Will C. Wood High School's boys coach five days ago.
Wudel is in his 19th season in Vacaville, the first 16 on the north side of town with Vacaville's Bulldogs. He won a symmetrical 275 games with the 'Dogs.
He doesn't see any reason why he can't win as many with the Wildcats.
"I'm not going to win the lottery ... if you have to work, you might as well do something you enjoy doing," Wudel said. "I still enjoy this, so I don't see myself quitting any time soon."
Other longtime coaches have made similar statements just before riding off into the sunset, but Wudel may be able to challenge his own local marks. He averaged 17 wins per season with the Bulldogs, and has averaged 17 wins in three ... well, less than three ... campaigns on the south side of town.
Wood already has 18 wins this season, and that total should grow at least a little. Wudel wouldn't mind starting with a pair of wins this week.
